What we keep, and why.

When you join the waitlist, we collect the email address you type into the form, which phone you have (iOS, Android or both), and the section of the page you submitted from (so we can tell which message resonated). If you sign up to test the beta, we also collect the name and answers you give on that form. That's it. We don't collect your location, IP address, or anything you didn't choose to give us.

We'll send you one email when Afri-Speak launches on the App Store, and occasionally a short note before launch with a meaningful update. Nothing else. No daily digests, no marketing from third parties, no sharing your address.

We use a small set of services to run this site and the app:

• Loops stores your email so we can send the launch announcement.
• PostHog is a product analytics tool. On this site we run it in cookieless mode, so it counts page visits without using cookies, local storage, or tracking individuals. The app uses it too, as described below.
• Netlify hosts the site itself. It also stores the reports you send when you flag a word in the app, and the set-up answers that earlier versions of the app sent us, as described below.
• Supabase stores your account and synced progress if you sign in to the app. The servers it uses for Afri-Speak are in London.
• Apple and Google let you sign in to the app. They confirm who you are, and share your name and email with us once, the first time you sign in.

Some of the services we use are based in the United States. Where your data is handled outside the UK or EU, it's protected by the standard contract terms those services sign up to.

You don't need an account to use Afri-Speak. Every game, the vocab deck and your streak work without one, and your learning stays on your phone. Sign-in is optional. It exists so you keep your progress if you reinstall the app or move to a new phone, and the app only suggests it once.

You sign in with Apple or Google. We never create a password for you. The first time you sign in, Apple or Google gives us your name and email address, and they only do this once. If you use Apple's Hide My Email, we only ever see the relay address Apple makes for you, never your real one.

Once you're signed in, we keep this on our servers, linked to your account:

• Your name and email address.
• A user id, and a random id for each phone you sign in on.
• Your onboarding answers: why you're learning, what you want to focus on, your level, your daily goal, and your reminder setting.
• Your best streak.
• A record of each day you used the app: whether you reviewed vocab, played a game, or hit your daily goal.

Some things stay on your phone even when you're signed in, and are never synced: your vocab card progress, your game statistics, and your profile photo.

Earlier versions of the app sent us the answers you gave when you first set it up: the name you entered, why you're learning, what you want to focus on, your level, your daily goal, your reminder setting and time, and whether you took the placement test, along with a random device id, whether you were on iOS or Android, and the IP address and basic device details that come with any web request. We stored them on Netlify to see how new learners set up the app. The app no longer sends them. We keep what we already hold until you ask us to delete it.

Apart from those earlier answers, the usage analytics below and any word you choose to report, we keep nothing about guests on our servers.

If you flag a word whose meaning looks wrong, we store the word, the game it came from, any note you add, and whether you're on iOS or Android, along with the IP address and basic device details that come with any web request. We use these reports only to fix the dictionary.

The app also collects usage analytics, using PostHog, the same tool this site uses. It tells us which screens are opened, which games get played, and how features are used, so we can see what actually helps people learn. If you're a guest, these events carry only a random device id. Once you sign in, they're tied to your user id, including earlier events from that phone, but never to your name or email. They're not used to track you across other apps or sites.

When Afri-Speak ships, some learning features will use a custom AI model to explain a missed word or suggest a similar one. When that runs, the only thing we send is the word or short phrase the feature is about, never your email, name, or any identifier we hold. We don't use what you send to train models, and we don't retain it on our side beyond the seconds it takes to return an answer.

You'll be able to turn AI features off in the app settings. If you prefer not to use them at all, everything else (vocab cards, games, progress tracking) still works without ever calling the model.

AI features are not yet live on the marketing site. This section describes the approach we'll use when the in-app features launch; we'll refresh the wording once they ship, and the date at the top will move.

We don't set any cookies of our own. PostHog runs in cookieless mode, so it stores nothing in cookies or local storage. That means no cookie banner, no consent dance, no tracking across other sites.

To leave the waitlist, contact us and we'll delete your email from our list within a few days. No questions, no friction.

To have the answers you gave when setting up the app deleted, email us with the name you entered and roughly when you set the app up, and we'll delete them.

To delete your account, open the You tab in the app and tap Delete account. That deletes your account and everything synced to it, deletes your PostHog profile, and, if you signed in with Apple, revokes the app's access to your Apple ID. All copies are gone within 24 hours. The app keeps working as a guest, and anything stored on your phone stays there until you delete the app.

Email hello@afri-speak.com and we'll send you everything we hold about you. There's no download button in the app.

We keep your account data for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, we delete that data too. We keep the set-up answers described above until you ask us to delete them.

Afri-Speak is built for teens and adults, and children are welcome to learn alongside a parent or guardian. Used without an account, the app never asks for an email address.

Accounts and the waitlist are for people aged 13 and over. If your child is younger, keep them signed out, or sign in with your own account. If you're a parent or guardian and think your child has joined the waitlist, set up the app with their name, or created an account, email us and we'll delete it. You can also delete an account straight from the You tab in the app.

If we change anything material, we'll update this page and note the new date at the top. The current version is the one that applies.
